10 businesses you can start at home

Are you fed up of working for an employer, and for a salary? Have you been toying with the idea of starting your own business? Read on to know what your options are.

1. Marketing Consultancy
If you have served for several years in a particular industry, and have acquired the know-how that it takes to become an expert in the field, why not consider the role of a marketing consultant? You could start your business by offering your services to known customers, and expand the base as the business grows.

2. Web-Based Business
If the world of the World Wide Web is your abode, starting up a business as a web designer or developer is not a bad idea. The set-up costs would include investment in computer systems, and the word is ‘go’ from there on!

3. Photography
 If photography has been an interest area all your life, why not turn this hobby into a business? All you need is the right equipment and the right digital tools to set ball rolling. What’s more, you could even opt for video photography to enhance the scope of work.

4. Online Trading
If you feel that the rise and fall in the stock market is the main cause of the fluctuations that happen in your heart, your soul lies in the share market. You can operate a business right from the comfort of your home as you offer consulting as well as trading services to your clients.

5. Real Estate
Property rates rising and falling make many consumers seek the advice and assistance of brokers or agents. If you have an interest in the field, you could take up real estate consultancy or brokering as an option to set up your business from home.

6. Automotive Parts
So, are you a car enthusiast and never imagined that you could turn your passion into a business idea? Well, here it is. You can tie up with manufacturers of parts and build a client base that requires them, but does not know how to contact the makers directly.

7. Pet Care
Animal lovers need not fret, for there are various options for them to start a business from home too. You could associate with a veterinarian hospital to know what products to purchase and hire one or two young helpers who love animals too.

8. Wedding Planning
While considered a female domain, scope for men to enter the industry is enormous too. However, you need to have the knack and organisational skills required for this job. You also need to have a good relationship with caterers, interior decorators, florists, hotels and various other service providers.

9. Food Catering
Did you think that cooking was just something that a homemaker had to do? Wrong! You can make a profession out of it, too! And that too right from your own home! All it requires is acquiring the right resources, gauging the tastes of your potential clientele, and of course, being a food-lover!

10. Gardening
Now this does not mean you mow the lawns and water the plants in the houses of other people. This implies establishing your own set-up or nursery, wherein you can not only house plants and flowers of all kinds, but also provide equipment, training and consultancy to avid garden-growers. Starting your own business, that too from home, may not be everyone’s cup of tea. However, cautious planning can help you turn a venture into a huge success. Make sure you know what your area of interest is!

India's youngest CEO's

Shravan (10) and Sanjay Kumaran (12), two brothers from Chennai have created mobile phone applications that have witnessed over 10,000 downloads across the world already.

Two tech savvy brothers Shravan and Sanjay Kumaran from Chennai have not yet completed school but are already co-founders and President (Shravan)/CEO (Sanjay) of GoDimensions, a mobile applications firm.
Studying in sixth and eighth grades, the Kumaran brothers have created mobile phone applications that have witnessed over 10,000 downloads across the world already.
The duo has already designed four applications for the Apple store that have been downloaded in over 20 countries.
According to their web site GoDimensions.com, they create applications 'primarily in the area of education, games, lifestyle and convenience.'
Some of their popular applications include Alphabets Board, Color Pallette and Catch Me Cop among others.

Color-Changing Chameleon Tiles

There is virtually no limit to what you can decorate with color-changing tiles (from Inventables). Daytime cityscapes turn into urban night scenes as the temperature in a room shifts. Notable applications include showers, floors and others surfaces likely to be exposed to temperature variations over time.

While some of these are simply colored and relatively inexpensive there are all kinds of untapped design potentials yet to be explored. Perhaps they would make a good interior design match for an exterior application of some light transmitting concrete.

Creative Scan-and-Draw Color-Changing Pen Design

Any artist or designer who works with color knows that the best inspiration and perfect coloration can often be found in real-life objects all around us. What if you could take your trusty drawing pen and simply scan any color you want and then turn around and draw with it? This innovative pen design by Jin Sun Park allows you to do just that. Next step? A complete texture selector and replicator?

A color sensor on the top of the pen registers the color of the object you select, which in turn is displayed digitally on the back of the device for verification. Red, green and blue inks are then mixed – much like in a traditional printer – to create your desired color.

Of course, such an invention has its limitations: space for ink and batteries are challenges to be sure, but presumably you would only use this periodically and would also transfer the color data in some cases directly to another electronic advice, thus saving ink. While only in pre-production and sure to be extremely expensive initially one could easily see this become a household gadget and essential tool for every artist and designer for both real-life and web applications.

Higher the Qualification, Harder It Is To Get A Job

Calculations by TIG using the labour bureau numbers show that unemployment rises steadily with education level. While unemployment among the illiterate is 1.2%, unemployment among graduates is 9.4% and among post-graduates it is 10%. In the United States and United Kingdom, where recession has led to poor job growth, the unemployment rate for graduates is at a record high, but this is still under 5%, in comparison.
For urban India, graduate unemployment is 8.2% while unemployment among post-graduates is slightly lower, at 7.7%.
These findings are consistent with those of the National Sample Survey 2009-10 which show that the higher the level of education, the higher the open unemployment, says Santosh Mehrotra, economist and director-general of the Institute of Applied Manpower Research, an autonomous institution under the Planning Commission. "The illiterate are the poorest, and the poorest simply cannot afford to be unemployed, so they do some work, even if they are under-employed," says Mehrotra. "As a result, in poor economies like ours, you see very little open unemployment," he says.

The correlation between low education and low unemployment also explains another finding of the Labour Bureau, that socially disadvantaged groups like scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and other backward classes have lower unemployment than "others". At the aggregate level, unemployment among SCs is 3.2%, for STs it is 2.7% and for OBCs it is 3.2% as compared to 5.4% for "others".
However this appears to be a result of lower education levels among backward groups, because at the higher end of the education spectrum, there is higher unemployment among backward castes than for "others". Among SCs, graduate unemployment is 11.3% and post-graduate unemployment 12.7%, while for "others", the corresponding figures are 9% and 9.7%. Unemployment among graduate and post-graduate STs and OBCs is also higher than for "others". Across social groups, graduate unemployment among women is above 25%.
Ram Mohan Kumar completed his BCom from a private college in Noida in 2008. The son of a carpenter, he is the first person in his family with a degree. "It was not possible for me to study after that because post-graduate courses are too expensive. I looked for a job doing accounts or insurance work after graduating but I could not get anything. Now I do odd jobs for a living. I feel my degree is just wasted," he says. Indu Rai, who like Kumar is dalit, completed her M.A in Sociology from Damoh in Madhya Pradesh. "I thought I could get a teaching job but everyone asks for a BEd. I have five siblings to educate. How can I do another degree now?" she asks over the phone.
Mehrotra says that the higher levels of unemployment among graduate SCs points to discrimination in the labour market, an issue that economist and Indian Council of Social Science Research chairman Sukhadeo Thorat has written about. In a landmark study, Thorat and his fellow researcher Paul Attewell answered job ads with fictional resumes. They found that applicants with a dalit surname were systematically less likely to be called for an interview than upper caste applicants with poorer qualifications than the dalit applicants.

7 Legitimate Work-at-Home Jobs for 20-Somethings

One ad reads, "I will juggle three fire clubs with a firework on my head for $5." Another offers a 45-minute Spanish lesson on Skype or professional advice on buying real estate. All are on Fiver.com where anybody can sell a service for $5, many through the Internet.
The website is indicative of how the work-at-home job scene has evolved in just the last few years.
"We are now seeing younger and younger people working from home," says Michael Haaren, co-founder of RatRaceRebellion.com, which has tracked 17,000 telecommuting jobs since 2007.
"Three years ago, the person who typically worked at home was a mom who wanted to be there for her children. Now it's skewing younger -- and the young people, they are multitasking."
Many young people have turned to telecommuting due to the lack of entry-level jobs in a struggling economy, Haaren says. These jobs can vary wildly and do not always pay well, but for the intrepid they can be pieced together to pay the bills.
From more lucrative positions to the usual telecommuting stalwarts, Bankrate took a look at seven industries where a computer in a spare bedroom could mean lots of spare change.

From old-school to new-school
Job: Teacher/Tutor
Pay: $10 to $14 per hour
Hiring for online instructors is robust, as for-profit universities, such as Kaplan and the University of Phoenix, grow, Haaren says.
And colleges aren't the only schools looking for teachers. All the teachers at the Florida Virtual School, which enrolls children from grades 6 to 12, work from home. Jennifer Kohn, spokeswoman for Tutor.com, says the company has about 2,500 teachers on contract and a waiting list of thousands. She says tutors teach students of all ages and levels. Recent graduates, and even those still in college, are a good tutoring fit as long as they pass the application process. It also offers those who are retired a great way to supplement their retirement income while giving those taking a break from the real classroom a way to still have income.
"The people who can really do calculus and chemistry get paid more," she says. One reason online tutoring is growing is that the students like the anonymity of the service. "It takes away any sort of biases," Kohn says. "It's just about the work." As for the tutors: "People like the flexibility," Kohn says. "They can set their own schedule. They can change their hours weekly as they see fit. You can tutor at 9 o'clock at night if you want."

Shop 'til you drop
Job: Mystery shopper
Pay: $5 to $40 per assignment
One of the more unusual trends for those working from home is employment as a mystery shopper. It basically consists of going to a store and evaluating the experience. For your help, the home company pays you a small fee.
Mystery shopping gives new graduates still looking for a traditional 9-to-5 job an opportunity to help pay the rent, Haaren says.
The make-believe shopper, who is reimbursed for all goods, might also be required to interview customers or perform other evaluating tasks to report to the company.
Mystery shopping is estimated to be a $1.6 billion per year industry, employing more than 1 million secret consumers, according to New York City-based Mystery Inquiries. The company states on its website that it has 2,500 businesses looking for evaluators, 66 percent of which are retail and restaurant businesses.
With some assignments, the mystery shopper doesn't even need to leave his or her home, making phone calls to businesses to make observations on customer service. The pay varies with the assignment, according to Mystery Inquiries. A fast-food experience may net $5, while pretending to buy a car at a dealer can fetch up to $40. Some jobs involving wearing a hidden camera can be even more lucrative.

Peddle your goods online
Job: Crafter
Pay: Varies
Selling homemade goods online is a modern turn on old-fashioned small business. Leslie Truex, who runs WorkAtHomeSuccess.com, says these are true cottage industries. Some of these businesses are even bringing assistants into their homes to help them produce their products, which can be clothing, jewelry or any number of assorted knickknacks. The crafters then advertise their products on popular websites like Etsy, Artfire and Craftsu.
Selling goods or crafts can be a good way for a student or recent graduate to make a few extra bucks if it's something they enjoy doing, but they need to think about the time involved in their work and whether it will pay off.
"Most people will fail, but a few will be successful," Truex says. "The key is the ability to market themselves." You need to be able to know your market, and know where your potential clients can be found, she says.
James Dillehay, author of "How to Price Crafts and Things You Make to Sell," lives near Santa Fe, N.M., and says it's important to build up a customer base.
"Because there is so much competition, don't put all your hopes and resources into developing an Etsy store while ignoring face-to-face markets," he says.
Etsy reported $62.8 million in goods sold in March -- or more than 3 million items sold. The site charges 20 cents to list an item and 3.5 percent of sales. But don't think you must stick to just Etsy. Other craft sites out there are free, and some just charge a flat fee.

Take your business idea to the Web
Job: Internet entrepreneur
Pay: Potentially millions of dollars
The idea of the struggling artist has given way to that of the ambitious entrepreneur.
Marissa Feinberg says she sees a number of these dreamers at her business, Green Spaces, which provides them with an office setting when needed.
"Everyone is trying to be the next Facebook, the next Mark Zuckerberg, the next Instagram," she says. "They are getting new funding and circulating their ideas." Haaren describes the Internet entrepreneur movement as a "tanker full of gasoline." He pointed to the website Kickstarter.com and Crowdfunding.com, where creators of innovative projects can seek money.
Haaren also says new legislation supported by President Barack Obama will allow entrepreneurs to hold "mini IPOs" to get their businesses off the ground. One startup, he says, raised $3 million to fund its idea of synching electronic devices to a watch-like gadget.
Success stories such as Omgpop are fueling the fire. The one-time struggling startup hit it big with the Pictionary-styled smartphone game "Draw Something." The popularity of the game drew the attention of media game company Zynga, which purchased Omgpop earlier this year for almost $200 million.

The customer is always right
Job: Customer service agents
Pay: $8 to $15 per hour
The backbone of the work-at-home sector is customer service. And it's attractive to the younger set still looking to enter the job market because all one needs is a telephone and time.
Haaren says the service can vary widely. "Generally it's for inbound calls," he says. "It could be 'I need help ordering a pizza' (or) helping people with their credit cards." U-Haul, American Express, Apple and AAA are increasingly using home-based customer service agents, he says. Amazon is also looking to wade into the waters. "That's a big deal," Haaren says. "Amazon is like the 500,000-pound gorilla."
Allstayathome.com says customer service jobs are very plentiful, but unlike other jobs done from the residence, many companies require a set work schedule. The upside, though, is they may hire customer service agents as permanent employees rather than contractors. This means regular paychecks and benefits.
The downside to being a customer service agent is that companies often require a background check, for which that applicant may have to pay. And, of course, dealing with unhappy customers comes with the territory, so a high threshold for abuse is often a necessity.

'How may I assist you?'
Job: "Virtual" assistants
Pay: Up to $44,000 per year
Young adults are flocking to virtual assistant jobs, Haaren says. Ads for this line of work vary. Some call for someone who can assist bank customers, others ask for a computer-savvy employee who knows Microsoft Word. Haaren says Internet research jobs such as these are some of the most abundant home-based jobs at the moment.
Another area for virtual assistants to explore is the integration of social media into businesses to get out their message on Facebook, Twitter and other bulletin board sites. "It's a lot of work, and a lot of people would just rather pay someone to do it," Truex says.
Indeed.com, a leading online job search site, says virtual assistants can earn as much as $44,000 per year, but there are young people offering their services as virtual assistants on the Internet for as little as $3 per hour.

Obama proposes $1B for science, math teachers

The Obama administration unveiled plans Wednesday to create an elite corps of master teachers, a $1 billion effort to boost U.S. students' achievement in science, technology, engineering and math.
The program to reward high-performing teachers with salary stipends is part of a long-term effort by President Barack Obama to encourage education in high-demand areas that hold the key to future economic growth — and to close the achievement gap between American students and their international peers.
Teachers selected for the Master Teacher Corps will be paid an additional $20,000 a year and must commit to participate multiple years. The goal is to create a multiplier effect in which expert educators share their knowledge and skills with other teachers, improving the quality of education for all students.
Speaking at a rally for his re-election campaign in San Antonio on Tuesday, Obama framed his emphasis on expanded education funding as a point of contrast with Republican challenger Mitt Romney, whom he accused of prioritizing tax cuts for the wealthy over reinvestment in the nation.
"I'm running to make sure that America has the best education system on earth, from pre-K all the way to post-graduate," Obama said. "And that means hiring new teachers, especially in math and science."
The administration will make $100 million available immediately out of an existing fund to incentivize top-performing teachers. Over the longer term, the White House said it plans to launch the program with $1 billion included in Obama's budget request for fiscal year 2013.

But the House and Senate both voted down Obama's budget earlier in the year, making it far from certain that Obama will be able to get congressional approval to spend $1 billion on master teachers.
An aide to Rep. John Kline, R-Minn., chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee, noted that the federal government already has more than 80 teacher quality programs and said it would be foolish to pump money into programs that may be duplicative or unproductive.
"Republicans share the president's goal of getting better teachers in the classroom," said Kline spokeswoman Alexandra Sollberger. "However, we also value transparency and efficient use of taxpayer resources."
Education Secretary Arne Duncan said he expected the two parties to come together to support achievement in areas of high demand.
"This initiative has nothing to do with politics," Duncan said. "It's absolutely in our country's best long-term economic interest to do a much better job in this area." A report released in February by the President's Council of Advisers on Science and Technology found that the U.S. must increase by 34 percent the number of students receiving degrees in science, math and related fields to keep up with economic demand.
The program will start with 2,500 teachers divided up among 50 different sites, the White House said, but will grow to include 10,000 teachers over the next four years. Obama, in partnership with a coalition of groups including the Carnegie Corporation of New York, has set a goal of producing 100,000 additional math and science teachers over the next 10 years.

Tom Cruise is once again the highest paid actor in the world, according to Forbes magazine's annual list.
The announcement, brought forward to capitalise on the Top Gun star's imminent divorce – Forbes usually publishes its list in August – offers convincing evidence that Cruise remains Hollywood's most bankable actor at the age of 50. According to Forbes, he earned an estimated $75m (£48m) over the last 12 months, thanks largely to the $700m success of the action blockbuster Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol earlier this year. Cruise topped the list despite a disappointing return of just $47m so far for another film he appeared in this year, the musical Rock of Ages.
Last year's highest paid actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, came second place this time around, and has to suffer the indignity of tying with Adam Sandler. Both stars made $37m over the last 12 months, during which DiCaprio starred in the poorly received Clint Eastwood biopic J Edgar and Sandler appeared in Razzie winner Jack and Jill.

A surprise new entry at No 4 is former professional wrestler turned actor Dwayne Johnson, who made an estimated $36m over the last 12 months following turns in Fast and Furious Five and Journey 2: The Mysterious Island. The top five is rounded out by Ben Stiller, whose voice work in the animated sequel Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted helped the film to return $426m worldwide last month. Stiller earned an estimated $33m in the last year.
The 2011 Forbes list was an all-American affair, but two British actors make it into the top 10 this time around. In (shared) sixth place is Sacha Baron Cohen, whose turn as a corrupt autocrat in comedy The Dictator helped him to estimated earnings of $30m in the last 12 months. Fellow Englishman Robert Pattinson crept into joint 10th spot with $26.5m, almost all of which came from his role as a sparkly skinned vampire in the Twilight Saga films.
The top 10 for 2012 also includes 2010's highest paid star, Johnny Depp, who shares sixth place with Baron Cohen on $30m, and Will Smith, also with $30m. New entrant Mark Wahlberg makes ninth, with $27m, and Taylor Lautner, who ties with co-star Pattinson in joint 10th on $26.5m.
Once again the estimated earnings secured by Hollywood's top male stars dwarfed the figures for their female counterparts over the last 12 months. Only Kristen Stewart ($34.5m) and Cameron Diaz ($34m), the top two on Forbes' list for women, would have made the men's top 10.
Forbes top 10 list

1 = Tom Cruise, $75m
2 = Leonardo DiCaprio, $37m
2 = Adam Sandler, $37m
4 = Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, $36m
5 = Ben Stiller, $33m
6 = Sacha Baron Cohen, $30m
6 = Johnny Depp, $30m
6 = Will Smith, $30m
9 = Mark Wahlberg, $27m
10 = Taylor Lautner, $26.5 m
10 = Robert Pattinson, $26.5 m
