Personalised Jewellery

Are you a lover of name jewelry? Maybe you think you are too old for a nameplate necklace or name ring or maybe you think it is just a passing fad and hence a waste of money? Let me tell you a little about personalized jewelry and share some suggestions with you.
Name jewelry has been around since at least the 1950's! I know a 60 year old jeweler who has been making it for many years and he told me that his father made it before him. While not "in style" for quite a few years, name jewelry has always been popular among youth and adults and once Sarah Jessica Parker began wearing her Carrie necklace when playing Carrie Bradshaw on Sex & the City it became the rage!
Examples :
* Body piercing jewellery
o Earrings

Careful from #90 or #09 Code...

It has been reported in the press that some unscrupulous elements may contact your mobile saying that they are from government agencies or Service Providers and request you to press #90 or #09. It is reported that doing so would transfer control of your SIM to the caller.

Follow The Money: China Property Developers Said Looking Overseas As Rich Clients Buy Abroad

Chinese real estate developers have begun investing in projects outside of the country in order to meet growing demand for overseas property among rich customers, Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post reported today. (See link here.)

Buyers are looking overseas because of restrictions on real investments in the mainland, or because of a wish to emigrate or own a vacation home, the newspaper said. Among the companies involved are Dalian Wanda Group, led by billionaire Wang Jianlin, Hong Kong-listed Country Garden, controlled by billionaire Yang Huiyan, and state-owned builder China State Construction Engineering Corp. Buyers are reportedly purchasing spots in Nassau, Australia and Malaysia. The articles were published in a property section of the newspaper that itself highlighted an advertisement for real estate for sale in London.

Besides the Chinese developers, the trend may benefit international real estate brokerages such as Savills and CBRE that are established in China and can pair Chinese buyers together with overseas sellers. (Click here for a related article.)

China isn’t likely to ease real estate restrictions greatly in the new future, Bank of Communications executive director Hong Hao said in an interview earlier yesterday. (Click here for the full interview.) That, along with a perception among many well-off Chinese that political and economic risk is on the rise in the country, suggests mainland real estate developers targeting customers looking to move money overseas should see good business for at least the near future.

Facebook's Lame Attempt To Force Its Email Service On You

You may or may not realize that you have a Facebook email address. It’s an @facebook.com address you can use to correspond with people on external email accounts from your Facebook inbox. Though it was called a “Gmail killer” when it first came out in 2010, it seems instead to have been D.O.A. As far as I can tell, no one really uses it. No one seems to want the Facebook inbox to be their main email account (with good reason). Facebook is trying to change that with a new little nudge. On your profile page, Facebook has taken the liberty of making your Facebook email your default contact address. (See right, and check your own profile.)

For me, this contact email was previously either my Forbes account or my Gmail account — both of which I prefer to be emailed at. While I appreciate Facebook as a “White Pages” that allows me to reach out to just about anyone, I’m not a fan of the social network’s screwy messaging system and the way it auto-sorts your email for you, putting emails from ‘strangers’ in a shadow inbox that’s easy to miss. As a result, I barely check my Facebook inbox.

Whether you opted for one or not, you do have a Facebook email address. If you have created a Facebook vanity url (such as “https://www.facebook.com/kashmir.hill“) then your FB email address is that vain phrase at the end plus @Facebook.com. If you haven’t customized your Facebook url, then your email address consists of the random number Facebook has assigned to your profile — which makes for a pretty lame email account. (See right.)

The presumptuous change to your contact preference was first noted by Gervase Markham on his blog. He objects strenuously to Facebook auto-creating email addresses for users and then trying to force those contacting them to use it. It’s an interception of user communications under the light Markham shines on it:

Canadian house purchased in 1982 for $15,000 now selling for $2 million

Photographer Sherman Hines purchased his Nova Scotia home for just CA$15,000 in 1982. Now, he and his wife are selling the restored 7-room home for CA$2 million. And he'd prefer you turn it into a museum.
But it's not a case of ego run wild. In truth, the home itself is a piece of history. Hines discovered that the home was one of the oldest in Canada, having been built in 1699 by French missionaries.

"As far as I can find in any research I have done, it is the oldest building east of Quebec City," Hines told the CBC.

When Hines first toured the 300-year-old house, he found it in disarray.

"We drove up and I crawled around in this basement, it was full of mud and debris," he said. "I was doing kind of a duck walk around, I couldn't stand up, and I fell in love with it."
After researching through historical maps, Hines realized the building had once been used by the French as a fortified church to protect them against British military forces. In the 30 years since purchasing the building, Hines has restored it to its former conditions and even used as much period furniture as possible.

"Part of my fun is saving the buildings, the other part is finding the materials to fix them up with," Hines said.
But now that the Hines children have grown up, he and his wife are planning on moving to smaller quarters.
"It was mainly a place for the children," he said. "It's a wonderful place for children to grow up, and now there are just two of us ... and we use three rooms."

EU court cuts Microsoft antitrust fine by 4.3 percent

By Foo Yun Chee
LUXEMBOURG (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp lost its appeal against an EU decision penalizing it for defying an antitrust ruling, bringing nearer to an end a decade-long battle with the European Commission over the U.S. software group's business practices.
However, judges at the General Court, Europe's second-highest, reduced the fine by 4.3 percent to 860 million euros ($1.1 billion) from the 899 million euros imposed in 2008. The 2008 fine - about $1.3 billion at the time - amounted to just over 2 percent of Microsoft's revenue for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008.
The European Commission imposed the penalty four years ago - a record at the time - after Microsoft defied an antitrust decision issued four years previously, by delaying the provision of information to make business easier for its rivals.
The EU regulator said at the time Microsoft had not complied with its order for 488 days.

"The General Court essentially upholds the Commission's decision imposing a periodic penalty payment on Microsoft for failing to allow its competitors access to interoperability information on reasonable terms," the court said in a statement on Wednesday.
But it cut the fine "to take account of the fact that the Commission had permitted Microsoft to apply, until September 17, 2007, restrictions concerning the distribution of 'open source' products".
Microsoft expressed disappointment at the verdict but did not say if it would appeal to the EU Court of Justice, Europe's highest.
"Although the General Court slightly reduced the fine, we are disappointed with the court's ruling," the company said in a statement.
The Commission welcomed the court ruling.
"The judgment confirms that the imposition of such penalty payments remains an important tool at the Commission's disposal," EU Competition Commissioner Joaquin Almunia, who enforces antitrust regulations, said in a statement.
The case highlighted the prickly relations between Microsoft and the European Commission over the last decade.
The company has in recent years taken a more conciliatory approach, marked by a decision to settle another antitrust investigation in 2009 related to the choice of a browser in its Windows operating system.
It has also lodged its own complaints to the Commission about the business activities of rival companies, notably Google Inc.

New Money-Saving Gadgets

In today’s rapidly growing world of tech, new products continue to emerge, offering us ways to save. Our Financially Fit team recently caught up with tech expert and host of Spike TV’s All Access Weekly Katie Linendoll for her roundup of some of the most recent and best money-saving gadgets and technologies.

The Waterpebble

For about 10 bucks, this tiny water-saving device placed near the drain in your shower can be programmed to let you know when it’s a good time to turn off the faucet. The Waterpebble gradually shortens its suggested stop time, teaching you to use water more efficiently over time. The gadget pays for itself pretty quickly. On average, it can save a household around 10–12 liters of water per shower — so depending on the size of your family, about 30–40 liters of water per day. “It's also not just the water savings that are important, but the gas and electricity savings, as the less water you use, the less energy you need to move the water, clean it and pump it around again,” says Linendoll.

The Nest Learning Thermostat

This device helps control your home’s climate without the added step of actually having to program it. Instead, this tiny device teaches itself after just one week of watching how you alter your heating and cooling. From there, it’s got what it needs to automatically adjust to lower your utility bill. You can even access Nest away from home and track your savings. This is the Porsche of thermostats, so it’s a relatively high upfront investment of around $300. “But remember, heating and cooling account for approximately 50% — or more than $1,000 per year — of the average household energy bill, and Nest has been proven to save up to 20%,” says Linendoll.

Swivl

If you’re an avid video blogger or you like to upload family events online, skip hiring a pricey cameraman, just Swivl it! Just place your smartphone or flip cam in the Swivl cradle, wear the mini marker and your device will follow your every move. Great for videoconferencing, lectures or creating virtual tours. Models start at $129.

Mobile HotSpots

If you need to connect on the go, this phone add-on, Linendoll says, is worth every penny. “Adding a personal hotspot to your phone or a separate device costs about $20 to $40 a month, depending on your carrier, but it can pay for itself in just a few days. It might sound pricey, but Wi-Fi in a hotel room can cost around $15 a night.”

The Internet has also welcomed a number of new websites and applications that promise consumers great savings in 2012 and beyond. One of Linendoll’s favorite new destinations is: Houzz.

Houzz

Houzz is a free app and website with over 250,000 high-quality photos submitted by over 40,000 professionals. It gives you ideas for every room in the house and keeps track of your favorites in a digital idea book. You figure design and architecture magazines can cost up to $5 off the shelf, and according to Houzz, homeowners buy about 10 magazines in the design or renovation process, so this app can save you at least $50 on magazines alone.

China advises India : "Show patience in resolving border issue."

Beijing, June 27 (IANS) India and China should be patient in resolving their long-standing border issue though "difficulties remain high", a senior official here has said, falling back on a Chinese metaphor to buttress his point. He also suggested that too much focus on the border issue might not be helpful.
A solution would work out in the course of time, just like "a watermelon, which when ripe will come down on its own", said Ma Jisheng, deputy director general of the foreign ministry's information department.
"More haste on the issue would lead to less speed," Ma told a group of visiting Indian journalists, adding that the talks should be backed by more cooperation and feelings in relations in the political field.
He noted that the joint working group on the border had "achieved some progress but difficulties remain high".

Ma also said that "too much focus" on the issue was a deterrent. "Change the ways and eyes and that will give a different approach to solving the issue," Ma said.
The two countries held their 15th round of border talks in New Delhi in January between Chinese special representative, State Councilor Dai Bingguo, and Indian special representative, National Security Advisor Shivshankar Menon. The next round of talks is to be held in China.
In separate interactions with the Indian journalists, Chinese officials, including senior women officers of the People's Liberation Army (PLA) , and experts on Sino-Indian affairs stressed that while the border issue involved "core national interests", it should not be allowed to dictate bilateral ties in other spheres.
Ma said the two countries should follow a two-track policy - hold talks away from the spotlight on the border issue while continuing to boost their ties in the economic, cultural, educational and other fields.

"Negotiations on the border issue should be on one track, and on other track the economic, cultural ties should go on," he said.
He said bilateral trade has jumped manifold in the last decade - from $2.9 billion in 2000 to $73.9 billion in 2011. "If all the attention had been on the border issue, then trade would not have jumped," Ma said.

To a query on reports of incursions by Chinese troops across the border into Arunachal Pradesh, a senior PLA officer, in another interaction, stressed that the border between their two countries has not been officially demarcated.
Maj. Gen. Yao Yunzhu, director of the Center on China-America Defence Relations at the PLA Academy of Military Science, said both India and China have a "different concept" of the Line of Actual Control as it is not a "physical concept". Thus, reports in the Indian media of Chinese troops having crossed over cannot be termed transgressions.

"The border has not been officially demarcated; therefore you cannot call it transgression by Chinese troops...We don't see how the calculation was arrived at...Maybe then Indian border troops have transgressed more than China has done, according to the Chinese side," she said, and stressed that China was for maintaining status quo on the border issue for stability and tranquillity.
Col Guo Hongtao, staff officer Asian Affairs Bureau in the defence ministry's foreign affairs office, said there were differences of perception of the Line of Actual Control between the two countries as "in some sections of LAC, China thinks it belongs to it, while India proclaims sovereignty, and vice versa...which leads to disagreement".

The nearly 4,057-km Line of Actual Control divides India and China.
To a question on the status of Sikkim, the official said China has officially proclaimed in 2004 that the previous line between China and Sikkim has been replaced by the Sikkim section.
He also said that the problem of issuing visas on passports to people from Arunachal Pradesh was "under discussion".

Income growth: 5.62%

Johns Hopkins University and its accompanying medical system are the city’s largest employers, with 1 in 10 city residents working in health care or research. Meanwhile, Baltimore’s technology and defense sectors are growing. Mosaic Techologies Group, SAIC and Northrop Grumman are hiring analysts, systems administrators and program managers at starting salaries well over $50,000.

Unemployment rate: 7.8%
Income growth: 4.22%
$50K+ job postings: 5,622

Worcester’s life-science sector is growing fast, and the sudden crop of new labs and offices means many biotech firms are hiring. Roughly 15% of Worcester residents work in health care, life science or information technology. The annual salaries for these jobs fall in the $75,000 to $80,000 range. Managers, who make up 6% of Worcester’s workforce, can expect to make more than $109,000 annually.

Cedar Rapids anchors the Midwestern tech, health care and finance sectors, and there are plenty of high-power firms hiring in all three. Rockwell Collins, an aircraft systems designer and the city’s largest employer, is looking for financial analysts, solutions architects and systems engineers. Aegon and the University of Iowa are also hiring en masse. Health care occupations pay an average of $62,000 a year in Cedar Rapids; computer and tech jobs pull in $65,000. Anchorage’s remoteness works in job seekers’ favor: Competition for jobs is relatively low, and companies pay top wages to lure talent north. Health care and energy are both top industries, with roughly 6% of the population working in each. CH2M, the international engineering firm, runs a large operation in the area and is currently hiring engineers, analysts and project managers. The Alaska Regional Hospital is looking for RNs. Oklahoma City is the place the recession forgot. Even in the darkest days of 2008, the city skimmed by with a 3.7% unemployment rate and saw considerable growth in its medical, education and energy sectors. The pattern still holds: 7% of city residents work in health care, 6% work in education, and 6% work in construction and extraction, often for large oil and gas operations, such as Devon and Chesapeake Energy. In fact, Chesapeake is currently hiring accountants, analysts, project managers and a range of other positions. Salaries average north of $60,000 per year.

All three fields promise good jobs: Baystate Health is hiring nurses and speech pathologists; Travelers and Cigna Insurance are looking for research analysts and project managers. Salaries run about $70,000 a year and up.
