Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security is trying to nip terrorism in the bud by sending would-be suicide bombers to a kind of spiritual rehab.
Young men arrested for attempting to carry out a bombing are brought to a high security detention facility in Kabul, where they spend their time dedicated to prayer and study of the Koran
NDS agents also try to educate detainees about the dark side of the Taliban. “We work with them psychologically, we show them movies and films of atrocities of the Taliban and we also take them to mosques to see thousands of worshippers,” Chief NDS spokesman Lutfullah Mashal
Suicide bombings by insurgent groups killed 431 civilians in Afghanistan in 2011, an 80% increase over 2010 Though the number of attacks hadn’t increased since 2010, the report pointed out, they had become more complex in their execution and led to larger numbers of casualties.
“The only two options are, first, to have really strong intelligence, even try to infiltrate the Taliban to get information about suicide bombers. Second, to raise awareness among families and not let the enemies use their children.”
Suicide bombings are now the cause of the second highest number of deaths of civilians and military personnel in Afghanistan, after roadside bombings
